Pulmonary emphysema refers to a pathological condition in which the elasticity of the distal end of the bronchioles (respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli) is reduced, with excessive expansion, inflation, and increased lung volume, or accompanied by airway wall damage. It is not a standalone disease, but a pathological product of the development of chronic diseases such as asthma and chronic bronchitis to a certain stage. The experimental emphysema lesions formed by papain are obvious and typical.
